In a bold statement that has sent ripples through the automotive world, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has unveiled what he calls a “game-changing” electric powertrain that could redefine the future of electric vehicles (EVs). At a recent press event, Källenius declared, “Our new engine will shake the entire EV industry,” signaling the company’s aggressive push to reclaim leadership in the increasingly competitive EV market.
Mercedes-Benz, already a dominant force in the luxury vehicle segment, is now aiming to revolutionize EV performance, efficiency, and sustainability. The newly developed electric drive unit, reportedly named “eATS 2.0,” is said to offer significant advancements in power density, thermal management, and integration. Designed entirely in-house, this next-generation electric motor will power upcoming models in the Mercedes EQ lineup, starting as early as 2026.
Key features of the new engine include a 20% increase in efficiency over current-generation motors, along with higher torque output and reduced weight. Mercedes engineers have also emphasized their breakthroughs in silicon carbide (SiC) inverter technology, which enables faster switching speeds and better energy conversion. This translates to longer driving ranges, faster charging, and superior performance – all while using fewer rare-earth materials.
Another major highlight is the integration of thermal systems that allow the motor to self-cool more effectively, maintaining peak performance even under extreme conditions. This would give Mercedes EVs a performance edge in both everyday driving and high-demand scenarios such as towing or high-speed travel.
Perhaps most impressively, Mercedes claims the new powertrain will reduce manufacturing costs while enhancing recyclability – a step forward in sustainable automotive design. Källenius emphasized that innovation isn’t just about speed or power: “It’s about creating a future where luxury and responsibility go hand in hand.”
The announcement arrives as global automakers race to develop more efficient and powerful EV technologies. With Tesla, BYD, and other major players already pushing boundaries, Mercedes’ new engine represents a serious challenge to the current status quo.
If Mercedes delivers on its promises, the eATS 2.0 could indeed mark a turning point – not just for the company, but for the entire EV industry. As Källenius put it, “We are not here to follow trends. We are here to lead.”
